alternative news from the game world..

May 30, 2007

Two things caught my eye today.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070530/hl_nm/cigna_videogame_dc

This article talks about a video game by HopeLab called ‘Re-Mission’ which lets young adults blast cancer while learning how to improve the odds of beating the disease. The game can be downloaded free from Cigna’s web site (www.cigna.com).

Secondly,  www.ocregister.com/ocregister/money/article_1702706.php  tells the story of a young boy with brain cancer visiting Blizzard’s development studio thanks to Blizzard and the Make a Wish Foundation.

Computer Classes

May 30, 2007

Hi,

The library has a class scheduled in June about Windows. I want to take you through how to access everything you need in Windows using two resources – the first is the Control Panel and the second is Windows Explorer. The latter is hidden away in the file system but is a powerful tool and should be on everyone’s desktop!

The class is scheduled for June 19th at 7:00 pm. or June 21st at 11:00 am. Please call the library if you are interested.

More than Music…..

May 30, 2007

Want to get an Ivy League education without wearing a crest emblazoned blazer? Try out Podcast U. If you have itunes installed for buying and organizing your music, try heading over to the podcasts section. Not only can you hear broadcasts from various entertainment and news sites, you can go to the education section and listen to seminars from Stanford, Yale and UCLA to name a few.

games!

May 29, 2007

I’m a believer in alternative literacies. While we’d all love to see our teens reading a book, we can find the learning and literacy in everyday activities. If you have a kid that likes video games – embrace it! Many games offer concomitant literacy activities – if you know where to find them. The online game World of Warcraft offers a Tolkien-esque world full of lore and adventure and strategy. If you see my avatar around my blog, it’s my level 63 Paladin named Lurcher.   lurcher1.gif

The library will be offering a video game event for middle-schoolers on June 22nd from 2-4 and will feature dancing, singing, racing, board games, Magic the Gathering and more! Call the library to reserve a spot.

Hello world!

May 22, 2007

Well, at least Hello! to the folks in Marlboro NY. What can the Marlboro Free Library do to meet your technology needs? Starting July 1st, you’ll be able to tell me in one on one sessions. The library will be deploying a computer specifically for computer related questions and education. Have you ever wanted to know how to:

  • attach a picture to an e-mail?
  • burn pictures from your digital camera onto a DVD?
  • create a family website?
  • navigate through Windows XP or Vista?
  • put a listing on eBay?
  • create a blog?
  • make a website or brochure for a class project?
  • know more about virus scanning?

To the best of my ability I will try to help! Watch for our latest summer newsletter for more details.

——————————————————————————————

It all happened in 1990 when my brother introduced me to a little Sierra game called

‘The Colonels Bequest’ The Colonel’s Bequest Check out those graphics!

I was a fan of both computers and gaming from then on. In 1991, I spent $2600 on a 100 Mb Compaq Presario so I could play the game Phantasmagoria. Most of my computer savvy has come from getting PC gaming up and running on various computers. I also have a Computer Science degree and worked at IBM for 20 years before studying Librarianship.

Hope to see you at the Library soon -
